Learn the fundamentals of painting the figure in the studio and en plein air by studying the approach and techniques of the masters such as Sargent, Sorolla, Zorn & Fechin. The focus will be on achieving accurate drawing and correct values; two of the most crucial aspects of representational painting. Topics covered will be understanding direct, ambient and reflected light, how sunlight affects color, seeing color and value as a unit and capturing the features of the model to create a likeness. You'll learn how to break down the fundamental form of the figure into large shapes or masses. There will be instruction on how to mix clean color in the correct temperature & value in order to create the illusion of light on the figure. The instructor will demonstrate and explain her methods throughout the day and work one-on-one with each student. In case of inclement weather, students will have the opportunity to use reference materials and learning how to translate photos into useful information for paintings will be discussed.
