Pastel is one of the most permanent and versatile of all painting mediums, allowing for many corrections and layers to build up to beautiful paintings. They are immediate, spontaneous and allow the use of both subtle and vibrant color and many different painting styles. We will discuss different types of papers and pastels and do a few exercises to learn the kinds of strokes used to achieve various painterly effects, as well as a basic use of colors. There will be a short demonstration of a simple landscape painting including common landscape elements such as skies, trees and grasses. Then, students will do a landscape painting from their own photograph. Students will learn how to begin, proceed and finish a painting, as well as how to avoid and overcome common problems. There will be plenty of personal attention given to each student.
